I finally got a first look at my custom order from Nearer the Moon! This will obviously be part of a larger review in the future, but I was so excited I just had to put it up. Lots of people asked me what I asked Tilly for in terms of look, and I basically asked her to take her fabulous Hyper Floral collection and turn it into the froofiest and most feminine robe possible. I see she’s now added it as an extra offering on her Etsy store as well!

Reviews of the robe and the spanking shorts will be forthcoming on the blog as well as a review of the custom design process, which was new to me.

Five Tips To Help You Find Independent Lingerie Sales

Image via Salon Chaton

Whenever I feature an indie lingerie designer around here, I always get some questions about affordability. Now that we’ve covered five reasons to buy from indie designers, I thought I’d give out some tips to help you find the indie designer sales when they happen. Lots of people know to look for sales on the big sites, but there are lots of places to look for independent lingerie designer sales as well.

1. Follow your favorite designers on Facebook.
Facebook has a strong independent lingerie community, and most designers interact heavily with their fans through their Twitter and Facebook pages. Designers will frequently post sales exclusively to Facebook or Twitter, so make sure you follow your favorites so you don’t miss one!

2. Look for mailing list discounts.

I know everyone sort of resents mailing lists (or maybe this is my overstuffed inbox brain talking), but lots of designers and boutiques offer special discounts for subscribers. Many independent designers work with boutiques and offer discounts to their customers, so make sure you look at them as well.

3. Ask about photography discounts.
Designers who deal heavily in the burlesque and pinup world often offer photo discounts if you’re buying pieces for a shoot. While pinup pictures aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, this can be a great way to catch a break on that perfect piece of lingerie if you’re planning a photoshoot and want to show off the results.

4. Free international shipping is worth it’s weight in gold.
Sadly, with shipping prices skyrocketing lately this statement is less of an exaggeration than one might think. While free shipping isn’t technically a sale, international shipping prices can add up quickly. If you can catch a free shipping special, you’ll save a bundle of money as an international buyer. These specials can also be a great time to buy several pieces at once that you’ve had your eye on.

5. Look for end of the line sales and sample sales.
Sometimes designers will discount pieces that have been in their shops for awhile or when they’ve run out of a certain fabric and can’t restock it. If you’re willing to wait several months, you can often pick up pieces you’ve had your eye on for awhile. These won’t be the amazing low cost clearance sales that the big sites have, but there are definitely good deals to be found.

What are your favorite ways to pick up indie lingerie? Have you found any good deals?

Lingerie Lust Of The Week: Floral Silk Bed Jacket and Knicker Set by Ayten Gasson

When you’re a full busted blogger, it’s easy to spend all of your time focusing on bras. I think for awhile (and sometimes still) it was easy for full busted women to believe that the only lingerie out there for them were bra and panty sets. Luckily, lots of large companies and indie lingerie designers have spent the last few years improving our full bust friendly loungewear options.

I want to touch on a secondary issue here: if there’s one thing I want you guys to take away from this blog, it’s that the indie lingerie world is awesome and way more inclusive than it seems from the surface. I think this Ayten Gasson set is a great example of how anyone can wear indie lingerie, even if the designer you love doesn’t make your bra size.

That said, I own two of these sets and love them. I wear the silk jackets with pencil skirts and add a belt if I want a more cinched in waist. They’re also great to lounge around in during the summer heat when you want something nicer than yoga pants or shorts to hang out in. Ayten uses local silk which is high quality, buttery soft, and will custom make the set to your measurements if you contact her. If you’re looking to treat yourself to something lovely and new, this set is a great choice. I imagine that it would also be a great set to give as a gift to someone extra special.

This set (and all other ranges) are 20% off until April 30th on her website with the code 20SPRING! This makes it an extra great week to try out some decadent loungewear.

Do you have a bed jacket obsession too? Have you tried Ayten Gasson lingerie before? Let me know in the comments.

I love that IGIGI is showing more separates this season as well, as their past collections have focused heavily on “occasion” dresses. The color of this skirt is amazing and it’s great to see someone putting out gorgeous pencil skirts in such a wide size range.

Lingerie Review: Rago 919 and 910 High-Waisted Panties!

Image via Dollhouse Bettie

Today we’re revisiting my spring quest for high waisted panties with more reviews! If you missed the previous installment, my review of two Between the Sheets panties can be found here.

I’ll start with a confession: I almost always wear dresses or skirts these days. If you see me in pants, it probably means I didn’t expect to see any other humans that day or that I’m really behind with my laundry. As a result, my lingerie collection is built heavily around skirt friendly panties.

I’ve heard lots of rave reviews about Rago, but I only know people who wear their shapewear. I was searching for every day high waisted panties, but without the shapewear component. I’ll admit that I picked up these red ones after having a very awkward Marilyn Monroe moment on a windy day in my favorite red sundress several weeks ago. If the whole neighborhood has to see your underwear, it might as well be high waisted and matching, right?

I’ve always loved the images and types of lingerie that Dollhouse Bettie carries, but had neglected to try them out until now as they don’t carry many bras in my size. I had a great shopping experience and I’ll definitely be back. They have some loungewear pieces that are just incredible and are calling my name.

But, back to the panties. I wanted several pairs of basic high waisted panties that were high quality, not too expensive and would work well for everyday wear. After going through tons of options, I decided to go with the brand I’d heard the most about and picked Rago.

Rago sizes their panties by waist size, so as a 33 inch waist I ordered one pair on 32 and one in 34 to see what the size difference was. Both are wearable, but I’d order the 32 the next time.

Image via Dollhouse Bettie

Both of these are advertised as control briefs, but I wouldn’t say they had any serious shapewear properties at all. This makes them great for daily wear when you want to run around and be comfortable but still have a smooth line underneath your skirts or dresses. Both are made of a thick high quality satin that I suspect will last an incredibly long time with decent care. While you’ll pay a little bit more for these than you’d pay at someplace like Target, these panties will give you more wear and have a longer shelf life.

Since I do not look like the Dollhouse Bettie models, I was a little worried that these panties would hit right where it maximized my stomach. I’m one of those people who carries most of my weight in my stomach and my boobs, which means that things have to hit at exactly the right point to be flattering. I’m also short, so sometimes normal high waisted panties end up somewhere around my ribcage. Thankfully, these did neither of those dreaded things and looked great. I’ve already washed and worn them several times and they’ve held up well, so these may be my go to everyday panties from now on. I’m definitely intrigued to try more Rago pieces now after dipping my toe in the water with this order.

Do you love high waisted panties or hate them? Have you tried anything from Rago?

Pick of the Week: The Fantasie Jennifer Side Support Bra

Image via Bare Necessities

Image via Bare Necessities

We’re in that weird weather period here that happens slightly before spring every year – the temperature rises and then big storms roll through and cool things down again. In the past week, we’ve had everything from sunny 75 degree weather to giant hailstorms! All of this is to say, that while I’m ready for spring, I’m not packing up my practical winter clothing quite yet. This bra fits perfectly into pre-spring period, which is one of the reasons it caught my eye this week.

It can be hard to find bras that are both pretty and practical, but this Jennifer bra is a nice fusion of the two. The watercolor print is light and feels like spring, but the side support and full cup cut means that you’ll feel right at home in it when you want a smooth line underneath your sweaters as well.

This bra comes in 30 to 38 D through H cups, and 40D to 40FF. It can be found here at Bare Necessities and other big retailers, as well as at lots of independent lingerie shops.

Designer Preview: Spring/Summer 2013 from La Lilouche!

Image via La Lilouche

I’m more than slightly obsessed with brightly colored lingerie, so I was thrilled when a note from La Lilouche talking about “electric emerald green” showed up in my inbox yesterday. It also included a full set of photos from the new line, so I’ve highlighted some of my favorites and put the rest in a gallery for you below! La Lilouche always likes to play with interesting details from various angles, so it’s really worth checking out the whole thing to get a sense of the collection from multiple directions.

But first, some favorites:

I have this robe in black, but I absolutely love this pale blue version. It mixes and matches with parts of this season’s bridal collection, but would also be a fabulous spring standalone piece.

A real honest to god pajama set! I love cute yet classic pajamas and this set is really fun.

These are incredibly dramatic and fun high waisted knickers and I love them.

This is one for those film noir fans out there. Isn’t this fabulous and dramatic? It even has ruffles. I can just see Rita Hayworth wearing this.

I love the amazing beadwork on all of these pieces. The beadwork has become a focus of recent collections and it really La Lilouche stand out from the pack. Liya (the owner and designer behind La Lilouche) lives in India now and I can see the influence of sari beading on her work.

The rest of the collection is in the gallery below. It will go live on Etsy this Thursday (the 21st) and then on lalilouche.com a month or so after that. I suspect Bella Bella Boutique will also pick some pieces up if you like buying through them. La Lilouche will also make to order and is great at accommodating full busted loungewear lovers.

Which pieces are your favorite? Have you tried La Lilouche before?

Do you know about Sugarshape yet?

Image via Sugarshape

I don’t normally post about my columns, but I wanted to give everyone a chance to check out my column for The Lingerie Addict yesterday that features a full bust brand that is changing the way lingerie design and development works.

The Sugarshape community choose the colors and designs for each season, as well as the bras that are produced. They also make bikini tops and bra charms that are interchangeable among their bras. The third thing I love about them is how they show each bra on multiple models, so you can really get a sense of their lingerie on different body types.

Have you tried Sugarshape? What do you think of their new model?

A/W 2013 Lingerie Preview: Claudette!

Image via Claudette

Image via Claudette

Claudette has been getting a lot of press for the past few seasons and will soon be entering big nationwide clothing stores! I got to know the Claudette team at my first Curve NYC, so I’ve been cheering them on the whole way. Their designs are thoughtful, innovative and they have a commitment to increasing the size range of the line as fast as design and production constraints will allow. They’ve gotten lots of mileage out of their mesh Dessous line while still staying creative and reinventing their look every season. Seeing this lookbook, I think A/W 2013 will be their strongest season yet and represents a sophisticated and sexy twist for the line.

The new line displays a grown up sort of sex appeal without sacrificing Claudette’s highly wearable style. All of these would make great bedroom bras or every day bras!

Snakeskin prints will be heavily featured in a variety of classic yet unexpected colors. I’ve never even been tempted by snakeskin lingerie before, but the navy version of this is calling to me.

Between The Sheets: Ouvert Hi-Waisted Panty Review!

Image via Between the Sheets

Image via Between the Sheets

I’ve spent some time over the last few weeks doing the dreaded lingerie clearout, which was both scary and refreshing. I’ve rediscovered lots of great pieces that I should wear more often, but also gotten rid of stuff that was worn out or didn’t fit. The silver lining in all of this was that I had room to order new panties that were more to my taste than some of the older ones I’ve had lying around for ages!

I started with two pairs of panties by Between the Sheets, whose stuff I’ve admired for a long time. BTS is more of a glamourous lifestyle brand, so I’ve had a hard time finding an entry point for trying them out. Luckily, I found a few pairs of panties in their sale that inspired me to get out of my comfort zone and try something new.

I ordered two pairs of ouvert sheer hi-waisted panties – one from the Birds of Play collection and one from the Airplay collection. I’ve loved the look of both collections for a long time, so I was happy to have an excuse to try some of it out!

Image via Between the Sheets

Image via Between the Sheets

Both pairs of panties fit exactly the same way which made me very happy! It’s nice to see consistant sizing from two separate collections, which doesn’t always happen with lingerie brands. As you can see in the pictures, both of these pairs of panties are sheer and come up very high in the waist – since I’m short, they’re above my belly button.

Image via Between the Sheets

It took me one or two wears to adjust to this, since it can feel like a lot of panty the first time you pull it on. I actually fell in love with the height after a few wears for two distinct reasons: first, the height seems to balance out the sheerness of each piece. Secondly, it means that the cutout in each panty sits flatteringly above your butt rather than on it. This is a different look for ouvert panties, and it makes them a great choice if you want to try the style out but not feel so exposed.

Image via Between the Sheets

The shade colorway is an unusually beautiful color that works surprisingly well as a neutral, while the black/vanilla colorway is a nice take on basic black mesh lingerie. Each pair of panties has handwashed well and I suspect they will hold up nicely over time with proper care. I’m terribly sad that I missed out on the purple and blue versions of these panties, as I would love to have more pairs in other colors.

How do you feel about the ouvert panty trend? Have you tried Between the Sheets yet?
