I had heard some murmurs going around about a lingerie company that was getting ready to start a Kickstarter project for funding, but I hadn’t put two and two together until Blackbird Underpinnings contacted me on Twitter to let me know it was up. I clicked over and was totally shocked to see some genuinely gorgeous 1920’s and 1930’s style undergarments. I was hooked at the sight of gold crushed velvet high waisted panties (my obsession for all things high waisted is still going strong).
On a far less shallow note, can you spot the remarkable thing about these photos? Diverse models! It’s great to see young companies embracing the idea that lingerie is for everyone, especially as they look the past for inspiration.
The first collection from Blackbird Underpinnings is based on pioneering women and was primarily influenced by 1920’s and 1930’s style. Pieces are named after deservedly famous women such as Anais Nin, Edith Piaf, Josephine Baker, Marlene Dietrich and Coco Chanel. As someone who ate up all of Anais Nin’s books during my teenage years, I love seeing her come back as an inspiration for others. As an aside, I think it’s especially fascinating that Blackbird Underpinnings choose women who were pioneers but also not saints by any standards. These are women who explored their relationships, sexualities, political landscapes and societal codes – and were not always loved for it, either in their own time or by modern historians.
Blackbird Underpinnings has set a goal of $37,000 for their Kickstarter. As someone who works with lingerie companies and consults for them, I can tell you that this is probably a shoestring budget and is definitely a reasonable cost for this kind of thing. Blackbird Underpinnings is offering some fantastic rewards such as these Edith Knickers above and these Anais Bralettes. Customers who fund the Kickstarter will have access to each piece individually or the whole collection at higher donation levels. There are 23 days left, so you still have awhile to try and choose your favorite! As for me, I’m completely enamored with those gold velvet panties and the vintage style playsuit.
What do you think of Blackbird Underpinnings? Would you fund a Kickstarter campaign for a lingerie line?
