I spent some time scoping out the photos from the latest Pinup Parade in the Park event yesterday, mostly to see how the new line of Pinup Girl Clothing dresses looked on actual bodies. What I didn’t expect was to see so many fabulous (and obviously custom made) felt skirts. Felt novelty skirts have a long history and can be completely stunning – sadly, many haven’t survived as well as some other vintage pieces so you don’t see them as often. I was thrilled to see that Etsy seller DailySparkle was picking up the slack and creating some beautiful and kitschy custom versions for a new generation.
I’m not particularly into theme parks, but I do love the classic Disney movies. While they seem dated and unfeminist now, they were really revolutionary for their times in terms of art and music. The slightly jazz ‘Sing Sweet Nightingale’ number in Cinderella (1950) is still a great musical and artistic moment – and while Snow White doesn’t seem like much today, it represented a massive technical and artistic leap in 1937.
I think felt skirts tend to read as more of a costume to us today than they did in the 50’s, but I think these could actually be worn with some simple blouses and flats to tone them down. Each is a full circle skirt, so it has plenty of volume and can be worn with or without a crinoline. It looks like DailySparkle’s offerings change frequently, but she also does custom work. There were some incredible custom pieces by her at the Pinup Parade event, so it’s worth checking out the photos just for those.
Would you wear these? What is your favorite Disney movie?
