While everyone else in the US is going to a new exercise class or recovering from the holidays, New Orleans is gearing up for the high holiday season: Mardi Gras. While everyone else thinks of the big parades, Mardi Gras season here starts on January 6th and runs until February 17th – more than 40 days long!
Even if you aren’t into parades, it’s hard to miss the signs of the season. Neighbors start draping their houses in purple, green and gold and piles of King Cakes start appearing in grocery stores (if you want to try a mail order King Cake, Sucre makes the best one). Many people, myself included, spent at least a little time this week sending King Cakes to family members in other states to celebrate the season.
All of this got me thinking about seasonal lingerie! While these colors may not feel seasonal to the rest of the country, I feel like this time of year is a great time to indulge your love of color and let your sense of costume go a little crazy – even if no one else sees it. In that spirit, today I thought I’d round up my favorite seasonal lingerie pieces, from budget brands to luxury splurges.
Purple is such an easy color for lingerie because it comes in so many different shades. I tend to gravitate to eggplant or plum shades, so that’s mostly what is represented here. The Boudoir Beau Bra by Bravissimo is pretty, suitable for everyday wear and goes up to a K cup. The Fleur Rose Bra by Lulu Tout is beautiful and currently on sale for $32 – I’m really sad it’s sold out in my size. I reviewed the Paradise Babydoll by Sculptresse earlier in the season and I’ve worn it a ton since. If you want something pretty and unusual, it’s a great piece to pick up. Finally, in the luxury category, I’ve fallen hard for this Evelyn corset by Angela Friedman. I know lots of people who swear by corsets for superior support, so a good corset is on my list to try in 2015.
I love green lingerie, which is a shame as it’s really hard to find! This Cherry Blossom Bra by Bravissimo will be showing up in a review soon, so consider this a sneak peak for late January. I love the unusual color and the use of embroidery in this bra – it’s somehow both kitschy and elegant. The Coco Lace Bra is another sale pick from Lulu Tout (a Figleaves brand). It’s plainer but I love the color. The Can Can Bra comes from Bravissimo’s holiday line and also goes up to a K cup. I’m hoping I’ll get a chance to pick up the whole set before it all sells out. Finally, this Daisy Bodysuit by La Lilouche is a piece I’ve owned for awhile and loved. It goes with all kinds of skirts and always gets compliments. If you’re going to wear it as outwear, La Lilouche will double line it for you so you can wear a regular bra underneath.
Another one of my lingerie resolutions is to check out the offerings at Louise Ferdinand Lingerie. This gold and black Ali Bra reminds me of Wonderwoman in the best possible way. The Clara Bra by Panache is a great everyday set that doubles as something really special, even now that the winter holidays are over. I’ve had my eye on this Goldie gown by La Lilouche for ages now: I love the Grecian draped style as well as all the crystals. Last, but certainly not least, these gold velvet Edith panties from Blackbird Underpinnings will help you look Mardi Gras appropriate and help you stay warm this winter. In fact, they’d be perfect to incorporate into a Mardi Gras costume.
Seasonally Appropriate Luxuries:
Since Mardi Gras is the season for overindulgence, I thought I’d end with some amazing luxury body products that are infused with real gold (just in case 40+ days of cake covered in glitter isn’t your thing). This 24K Love Dust by Naked Princess comes in several different scents and is truly incredible. I had the good fortune to try out a sample at Curve years ago and it was a really memorable experience. If you want a more all purpose product, this gold infused version of Huile Prodigieuse truly makes everything better: your hair, your skin and pretty much anything else you can think of. While I’ve never sprung for the gold infused version, I really like the regular stuff: it’s a great moisturizer and surprisingly non-oily hair frizz tamer.
