I’ve always been a casual fan of Les Queues de Sardines stockings, but this season they’ve released two collections that also happen to be based on two of my favorite French films. I’m always captivated by designers who use unexpected sources of inspiration to put out pieces that break the mould and do something new.
I wanted to start this piece with a quick capsule review of my experience with LQDS stockings, since I know they’re on the expensive side. Lots of bloggers post about expensive stuff all the time and give out the impression that they’re rolling in money/sponsored goods. I do okay for writer, but I’m never going to be a millionaire – when I recommend pricier stuff, it’s because I think it’s a worthwhile splurge that I would save up for myself. I never buy expensive stockings, but I’m always happy to make an exception for LQDS. I bought a pair of their Bouba stockings a year ago and they’ve held up beautifully, despite the fact that I’m notoriously rough on stockings and tights. I love them as a treat for myself, but they also hold up long enough that the cost per wear is actually really decent.
LQDS recently released their Autumn/Winter 2013 line, which overlaps with their capsule collection called Cherbourg. Cherbourg is based on the classic film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which is full of gorgeous froofy goodness and should be on everyone’s “to watch” list. I’ve loved it since I was little, so I was thrilled to see this collection come out. The collection channels the bubblegum colors of the movie beautifully and evokes the same dreamy feel as the movie.
The newest LQDS collection is called Peau D’Ane after the Jacques Demy movie from 1970. Clearly the designers love Catherine Deneuve movies! The title translate to Donkey Skin in english and is a fluffy romantic take on a rather disturbing traditional fairy tale. It’s worth a watch for the amazing costumes alone.
Fittingly, the LQDS collection is done in regal jewel tones with over the top sun and moon motifs that feature prominently in the movie. Most stockings come in black, turquoise and a rich purple shade to suit multiple personalities.
If you want to pick some of these up and save on international shipping, check out the online selection at Lille Boutique. They usually carry a full selection of LQDS and have reasonable shipping costs!
