Around Valentine’s Day, I did a great interview with Jeanna of Bluestockings Boutique discussing all of the issues surrounding plus size lingerie consumers and the socio-political reasons why they don’t get the lingerie they deserve. In it, I lamented that companies seemed to be choosing an idealized version of “pretty” over representing their actual customers. After it went up, I was contacted by TomboyX to see if I wanted to review one of their pairs of underwear.
I’m going to get to the undies, but first I wanted to talk about what grabbed me about TomboyX. This groundbreaking company has a ton going for it besides comfortable undies! Their size range goes from XS to 4X. They choose models who are “citizen models”, chosen for their worth and personality over their looks. They use inclusive body-positive language everywhere on their website and in their marketing materials. They use ethical production methods to make their garments. On top of it, their products are really affordable. Naturally, I jumped at the chance to see if their underwear matched their amazing company philosophy and practices.
If you’re a regular blog reader, you will probably realize that these are not my usual lingerie aesthetic. I am the queen of ultra-feminine and frilly lingerie, with as many bonus ruffles, prints and sequins added in as possible. While I loved what TomboyX was doing, I wasn’t sure how my girly vintage loving personality would take to their products. The first thing that impressed me was all of the pretty colors. I picked the Tomboy Short in Plum to review, although it was a tough decision in the end.
In terms of sizing, I was right between the 1X and the 2X on the sizing chart. I went with the 2X since I hate tiny underwear, but I think I would have been just fine in the 1X as well. It’s nice high quality fabric with just enough stretch, so I don’t think an inch or so one way or another is going to make or break the sizing with this line. As you can see, the dog decided to get in on the photography action today as well.
I had obviously intended to review these sooner, but this is one of those reviews I put off due to an unusual reason: I wore them so much that I was constantly washing them and never had a chance to snap photos! These have gone through a ton of wash and wears and still look brand new.
These are made of a wonderfully nice cotton with just a touch of spandex, so they are extremely comfortable. The waistbands on these are advertised as silky in the product description and I can definitely confirm that “silky” is an understatement. I have no idea what they’ve done, but these have the most comfortable waistband I’ve ever experienced on a pair of underwear. They don’t dig in, they’re virtually seamless and they may be the single most comfortable pair of underwear that I own.
I’ve now worn these in pretty much all circumstances: under vintage dresses, under yoga pants and workout clothes and by themselves to sleep in. They’re seamless enough to work under pretty much anything and provide an extremely comfortable base layer for any style of outfit. I also really like them as sleeping shorts with a t-shirt.
These boy shorts cost $21.50, which is a extremely reasonable price for the quality and fit. TomboyX also has a deal where you can get 10% off if you order 3 pairs of any style, which I definitely might take advantage of in the future.
Would I purchase more underwear from TomboyX? Absolutely, yes. They’re wonderfully comfortable, hold up incredibly well, look cute and are extremely functional under any sort of outfit. Most importantly, you’re supporting a company that is genuinely doing something good for the world.
